What is the difference between a registered dietitian and a nutritionist?A registered dietitian (RD) is a protected title. Like doctors, nurses, or physiotherapists, RDs have a regulatory college (College of Dietitians of Ontario) to protect the public and ensure high standards of practice. RDs must complete a minimum of four years of undergraduate education, practical training, and adhere to evidence-based recommendations. In contrast, “nutritionist” is not a protected title in Ontario, and anyone can call themselves this.
